Patrick is an extremely experienced and fully qualified Level 3 Field Guide and accredited by Bird Life SA as a national Bird Guide. Focus is on small groups and all itineraries are seasonally tailored to meet individual client requirements. ‘Other-than-birding’ interests such as African wildlife (‘Big Five’), wine tours, and shark viewing, can also be incorporated. Established in 1997, BirdWatch Cape has introduced over 600 visitors to South Africa to the diverse and interesting bird variety offered in the South African dry west. From Cape Town to the Kalahari, deep into the endemic rich Karoo and down to the forests of the Garden Route our aim is to optimise your visit to this fascinating and underrated part of the natural world.

Whilst the focus is always is always on birds, we can take time out to enjoy the wide mammal and floral diversity and the great scenic beauty of this part of Southern Africa. The pace is entirely yours.

Operated personally by owners Richard and Ria Grant, we specialise in customised small group tours. Tours range from half a day to fifteen days in duration. Accommodation is comfortable and en suite and we take the opportunity to introduce you to traditional South African foods and cultures. We carry a maximum of five passengers per air-conditioned mini bus - everyone has a window.

We also offer a bird and natural history tour agency facility which can put you in touch with other bird guides and bird tour operators throughout South Africa.

Since long distances have to be covered, we use spacious air-conditioned vehicles (mostly VW Microbuses) suiting the itinerary. Four-wheel driven vehicles are used for the more "of the track" destinations.

Our guides doing the birding safaris are all specialist birding guides who are passionate about birds, and with their years of experience are able to guide both beginner as well as experienced birders. We offer a variety of birding safaris and always plan our itineraries to include as many endemic species as possible.
